Watermelon Mezcalrita: The Ultimate Spicy Watermelon Margarita

Looking for a drink that's both sweet and fiery? This spicy watermelon margarita is the answer. This smoky mezcal rendition, created by David Baldwin of Ponysaurus Brewing, is a perfect blend of fresh and bold flavors. It's the ultimate watermelon lime margarita, elevated by the unique spice of El Guapo™ Fuego Bitters.

What is a Watermelon Mezcalrita?

A Watermelon Mezcalrita is a twist on the traditional margarita. While a margarita uses tequila, a mezcalrita uses mezcal, a smoky agave spirit that gives the drink a distinct complexity. This particular recipe takes a spicy watermelon margarita to the next level by combining the fresh sweetness of watermelon with the smoky character of mezcal and a blend of chile liqueurs and bitters.

The Ultimate Watermelon Lime Margarita Recipe

This cocktail is a two-part process: first, you'll prepare the watermelon purée, and then you'll build your final drink.

Ingredients

Watermelon Purée

  • 2 oz puréed watermelon

Watermelon Mezcalrita

  • 2 oz mezcal
  • 0.5 oz Ancho Reyes
  • 0.25 oz Ancho Reyes Verde
  • 0.5 oz fresh lime juice
  • 0.5 oz agave
  • 2 dashes El Guapo™ Fuego Bitters
  • Mint leaves
  • Tajín spice, for rim

Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. Prepare the Purée: Before creating the cocktail, purée chunks of watermelon using a standard or hand blender. Set aside.
  2. Muddle the Mint: In a clean shaker, gently muddle the mint leaves with mezcal. This releases the mint's fresh oils and infuses the mezcal.
  3. Strain and Combine: Strain the mezcal-mint mixture into a separate clean shaker to remove the mint pieces. Add the puréed watermelon, Ancho Reyes, Ancho Reyes Verde, lime juice, agave, and El Guapo™ Fuego Bitters.
  4. Shake and Chill: Fill the shaker with ice and shake until well chilled.
  5. Rim the Glass: Rim a margarita glass by wetting the edge with water and dipping it into Tajín spice.
  6. Pour and Garnish: Strain the shaken margarita into the rimmed glass. You can serve it up or over fresh ice. Garnish with a Tajín-dusted watermelon wedge.
